Cairo International film festival
Movies are among the most liked means of entertainment which know no land and no boundaries. In Egypt too films are enjoyed by many and the Egyptian cinema is said to be the most popular one among whole of Middle East. When talking about films in Egypt something that cannot be left behind is the Cairo International Film Festival. Referred as the CIFF, Cairo International Film Festival is held every year in Cairo and celebrates films. This festival acts as a podium bringing together filmmakers, artists, producers, actors, directors, writers, critics, cinema and film lovers on a global platform to share their work and take part in the new light of the industry.
An overview about CIFF
The film festival featured in its first edition around 100 films from 33 different countries, having 14 movies from 14 different countries competing. The event is organized for ten days where a number of international films are shown at different venues. The event is differentiated into many sections like International Competition for Feature Films, International Competition for Digital Feature Films, Competition for Arab Films, New Arab Cinema, and Tributes.
CIFF for the first time was held in the year 1976 in the memory of the late writer and critic Kamal El Mallakh, who visited just a year before the Berlin Film Festival and wished to imitate a similar stage in Egypt as well. CIFF is said to be the first of its kind in the whole of Middle East and is ranked among the top 11 film festivals across the globe. Others on the list include Cannes Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, Montreal Film Festival, and Tokyo Film Festival.
Awards at the event
CIFF is known to give away fifteen different awards which include Golden Pyramid, Silver Pyramid, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Artistic Contribution, Special Mention, Naguib Mahfouz Award for the Best First or Second Work, Golden Award - Digital Films, Silver Award - Digital Films, Best Arabic Film, Best Arabic Screenplay, Special Award, and FIPRESCI (Fdration Internationale de la Presse Cinmatographique) Prize. Three juries that are responsible for deciding the whole award scene include The International Jury for Feature Films, The Arab Jury for Arabic Films and The International Jury for Digital Feature Films.
34th edition of the CIFF
Every year the CIFF is based on a different theme and it’s an event which is eyed by movie lovers from across the globe. The 34th edition of the awards was organized in 2010 and it revolved around bringing together the different movies that portray or were developed in Egypt. The 36th edition
This year would be the 36th edition of the CIFF which will be organized from the 9th of November till the 19th of November 2015 at Cairo. In simple words CIFF is the ultimate venue to enjoy a night of international cultural exchange.
