Most of the hotels in the pyramids area offer a free shuttlebus service from, and to, the airport for their customers and all you need to do is inform them of your flight details,
If you have not booked a hotel then Cairo Airport runs a shuttlebus to most areas of Cairo, including the pyramids area. Information, and prices, can be found at this address: http://www.cairo-airport.com/services_t ... tation.asp

I've made a reservation at the Mecure sphinx and they want $40 each way and I thought that was pretty expensive

$40 is about the usual price that hotels will charge, per person, for airport transfers to the Giza area, though some hotels do offer the service for free. Most visitors will opt for this as it saves the hassle of trying to get a taxi, many drivers have very bad English, and it gives you door to door service in an air-conditioned mini-bus.
If you feel that getting a taxi is a better option, the price should be about 100LE-150LE ($17-$25), please try and get one of the white or yellow ones, which are metered, and not one of the black cabs. White and yellow cabs have air-conditioning and are a lot safer to use. The price is for the taxi and not per person. Also, taxis often have restricted luggage space so if there are more than 2 of you, you may have to keep your cases on your laps, which is another reason many people opt for the hotel's shuttle bus.
