Port Said Governorate is one of the 27 governorates of Egypt. It is situated in the northeastern part of the country, directly on the Mediterranean Sea at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, making it the second-largest harbor in Egypt. The capital of the governorate is the city of Port Said, which was the headquarters for the construction of the Suez Canal and the lighthouse of Port Said. The governorate has a population of around 653,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 1,345 square kilometers.
The governorate was established in 1860 in a historical region known as Farma, which is 28 km away from Port Said. Port Said lies at the intersection of the historical roads between the East and the West of Egypt. It has a distinguished location that has added immensely to its economic importance all over the world and has placed it as a trade link between East and West. The main economic activities of people in the Port Said governorate are centered on fishing, transit trade, port services, and recently, industrial activity.

 Port Said is one of the most important ports in Egypt and a major center of tourism. Economically, it serves a vital function in terms of being a depot for shipping containers and transit trade. Right from the establishment of the Port Said General Authority in the year 1980, the Port has undergone ongoing development where the total import capacity now stands at 6 million tons, while its export capacity stands at 5.3 million tons, with a total amount of 10.7 million.
The geographic location of the port has contributed to the integration of transportation from the East Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf regions, therefore giving Port Said massive economic and also strategic importance. The local economy has also diversified into a number of navigation-related services and industries.

Some Important Things About Port Said Governorate

The recent discovery of a huge natural gas reserve turned the governorate into an area for natural gas development. Port Said currently hosts the biggest complex for natural gas liquefaction in the Middle East on the Western side of the region. 
The governorate is also privileged with various natural protectorates including Ashtoum el Gameel, 7 km west of Port Said, and Tenes Island, which is 7 km southwest of Port Said and also includes popular tourist destinations including the El-Sahelia and El-Ghoury citadels.

Location

Port Said lies in the northeast of the Delta region and is situated in a unique location right before the Suez Canal on the Mediterranean Sea coast. It is bordered in the north by the Mediterranean Sea, in the south by Ismailia, in the west by Sharkeya, Damietta, and Dakahlia governorates, and in the east by the North Sinai governorate.
There is a lot of one-day tourism to the Port Said governorate since various ships pass by the port for the day and let passengers get out and explore.
In cooperation with the Cabinet Information and Decision Support Centre, thirty information centers have also been established and developed across the governorate run by capable government staff. An IT training center was also established some years ago and has already trained 28,247 students including some who enter into the rulership of the governorate.
