Some interesting facts about Kafr al-Zayat

The Transportation Bridge over the river Nile at Kafr al-Zayat was a big project managed by the Ministry of Transport, General Authority for Roads and Bridges. The project involved constructing a bridge across the River Nile to accomplish important hydraulic works. The core part of the bridge is a pre-stressed concrete box girder which is made up of 5 spans. The three inner spans are of 100m each and two outer ones of 60m each. The approach is of multi-span pre-stressed concrete box girders having spans of length 40m each. The general layout, basic design and the approaches and embankments for the main bridge were designed by Hamza Associates who even prepared the documents for the tender.

The first railway station on the continent of Africa began getting constructed in the year 1852 and it became opened to the city of Kafr al-Zayat in the year 1854. Another section was later opened to Cairo after two years gap. The length of 120 miles consisted of constructing two bridges over the Nile; one was at Kafr al-Zayat and the second one at Benha. Before the construction of the Transportation Bridge at Kafr al-Zayat, the major means of transportation was a ferry across the river to Cairo city.
