It is quite common to hear that Morocco has no great architectural wonders. It is a country of modest towns, villages, and cities that are not in the habit of flaunting their grandeur. But, except for the capital city, many of its smaller towns and villages do have a fair share of architectural wonders. Tinmel Mosque is one of these architectural wonders, it is located in the village of Tinmel in the Rif Mountains of Morocco.
The town of Tinmel is situated at an altitude of over 2000 meters and is bordered by the Rif Mountains on the south and the High Atlas Mountains on the north. The town is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its picturesque natural beauty and the scenic views it offers. However, the beauty of the town and its surrounding countryside is not what makes it a place to see. It is an exceptional mosque that is located in the town that attracts tourists from far and wide.
Beauty in the Heart of Morocco
The Mosque is not known by just its locals, but also by people from all over the world. The beautiful mosque, built in the 16th century, was neglected and restored in the 1990s. The two-story building is made of mud bricks and has amazing patios and minarets. The ravishing architecture of the mosque is apparent from the exterior. Luckily, this Mosque is open to non-Muslims and anyone is allowed to enter it.
Tips before you go
To get the most from your trip to Tinmel Mosque, just keep in mind these tips:
You need to take a thrilling road called the Tizi n’Test in the High Atlas, then Tin Mal is just about 100 kilometers from Marrakech, and the Mosque is simply after the sign for Tin Mal.
Surely it is going to be a great journey through the Atlas mountains but the road is a little bit tricky. So take a local guide with you or a good driver to get there in peace without getting lost. As well keep in mind that you are in the heart of the Mountains so the connection is not perfect. Lastly, no fee is required to visit the Mosque. So enjoy your time and see you in another exceptional sightseeing in Morocco.
