The Transportation Bridge over the river Nile at Kafr al-Zayat was a big project managed by the Ministry of Transport and the General Authority for Roads and Bridges. The project involved constructing a bridge across the River Nile to accomplish important objectives. The core part of the bridge is a pre-stressed concrete box girder comprising 5 spans. The three inner spans are 100m each, and two outer ones of 60m each. The approach is of multi-span pre-stressed concrete box girders with spans of 40m each. The general layout, basic design, and the policies and barriers for the main bridge were designed by Hamza Associates.
The first railway station in Africa began being constructed in 1852, and it opened in Kafr al-Zayat in 1854. Another section was later extended in Cairo two years later. Its length of 120 miles consisted of the construction two bridges over the Nile; one was at Kafr al-Zayat, and the second was at Benha. Before the structure of the Transportation Bridge at Kafr al-Zayat, the significant means of transportation was a ferry across the river to Cairo.
